Rooted In Tradition

The Story of
1859 Historic Hotels

Black and white historic photo of the Menger Hotel

Our story began in 1859, when William Menger added a tavern and boarding house to his famous San Antonio brewery. It was the first of its kind in Texas and it laid the foundation for 1859 Historic Hotels. Over the years, the Menger became a legendary fixture next door to the Alamo and now reigns as the oldest operating hotel west of the Mississippi.

For more than 150 years, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting countless prominent guests from the worlds of sports, politics and film, including Babe Ruth, Elizabeth Taylor, Teddy Roosevelt, even Thomas Edison. From the Cliff House at Pikes Peak nestled in the Colorado Rockies to downtown Louisville’s legendary Brown Hotel, the 1859 family of hotels boasts a range of stories unmatched in the hospitality industry.
